Netlinking: Definition and Key Concepts
What is netlinking?
Link building (netlinking) is the set of actions aimed at obtaining inbound links (backlinks) from other websites to yours.
Unlike a “backlink” (the link itself), netlinking refers to the strategy: what to promote, on which sites, with which anchors, and at what pace, in order to improve SEO visibility without taking risks.
Why is netlinking important?
- It strengthens a website’s authority and credibility
It helps rank better on competitive keywords
It can generate qualified traffic (if the links are placed on actively visited websites) - It complements On-Page and technical SEO: without a solid foundation, netlinking “doesn’t hold up”
It complements On-Page and technical SEO: without a solid foundation, netlinking “doesn’t hold up”
Netlinking vs backlinks: the difference
- Backlink = a link coming from another website
- Netlinking = the method and strategy used to obtain high-quality backlinks
The 4 pillars of an effective netlinking strategy
1) Pages to promote (target pages)
Do not link only to the homepage. Prioritize:
- service pages (SEO audit, local SEO, e-commerce SEO…)
- category pages (for e-commerce)
- guide pages (pillar content)
2) Source websites (where to get links)
A good link spot should be:
- relevant (close topic)
- trustworthy (real website with quality content)
- able to bring traffic + credibility
3) Anchor texts (clickable text)
A healthy strategy naturally varies:
- brand anchors (Digiseo)
- URL anchors (https://…)
- topic anchors (SEO audit, local SEO…)
- long-tail anchors (e.g. “complete technical SEO audit”)
4) Progression (link building pace)
A clean link building strategy is gradual:
- start slowly
- maintain consistency
- avoid unnatural sudden spikes
Types of link building (and when to use them)
Editorial links (the best)
A website cites you because your content is useful (guide, study, checklist).
Guest posts / partnerships
You publish content on a partner website (or you are mentioned in an article).
Brand mentions (quick opportunity)
Someone talks about you without a link → you request the link to be added.
Citations / directories
Mainly useful for local SEO, but should be done selectively (quality > quantity).
A simple method (in 5 steps) to launch a netlinking campaign
Define the objective: which pages and which keywords to rank for?
Choose 5 to 10 target pages
(Pages that convert or are strategically important)
Create 1 “reference” content to be cited
(Guide, checklist, case study)
List relevant websites
(Media, blogs, partners, quality directories)
Set a consistent pace
(e.g. a few links per month, on a regular basis)
Common mistakes (and solutions)
Mistake 1: Targeting irrelevant websites (just to get a link)
→ Impact: weak link, sometimes toxic
→ Solution: choose websites close to your topic and credible
Mistake 2: Over-optimized repeated anchors
→ Impact: unnatural profile
→ Solution: vary anchors (brand, URL, topical, long-tail)
Mistake 3: Too many links in a short time
→ Impact: suspicious signal
→ Solution: natural growth + consistency
Mistake 4: Building links to weak pages
→ Impact: limited results
→ Solution: improve the target page (content + UX + internal linking) first
